Just When You Thought It Couldn’t Get Any Better!

 Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 9:10pm

Ever have one of those crafty days when everything seems to be too perfect? You’re in your crafting groove….the creativity is rocking…things are going well…mojo is flowing…you’re having a productive day like no other andthen ALL OF A SUDDEN as your gluing the last piece of ribbon to a cardor the last button toa flower’s center on yourscrapbook page, a huge glob of glue comes squirting out like someone sneezed all over your project?Wiping it up doesn’t help, it only makes the mess more of a disaster. You either have to grab the loose glitter and make your project sparklier than you had ever intended( because the sympathy card you were making for the cashier at the local Walgreen’s who just lost her AuntAgnus now looks like it’s a “congrats” cardfor the neighbor who lives three blocks down on the right who eloped and had a Vegas wedding) OR you try to salvage pieces of the “I thought I was done with thiscard project” only tofind the only thing not covered in glue was the envelope so you have to start fresh? How about when you’re using a pen or marker adding the final touch to the perfect card and you’re pen suddenly spurts out too much ink or skips and leaves an ugly mark…ALWAYS in the most obvious spot? And of course the stamps. Your “crafterpiece” is looking mighty fine. All it needs for the final touch is the sentiment or a flourish in the corner. You grab your ink pad…ink the stamp and ink it up good…. and wha-la! Half of the stamp doesn’t appear or you end up with an ink blob that isn’t part of your project? Maybe I’m just a sloppy crafter, please tell me I’m not alone…is it really just me?!

Have you ever had one of those days where everything is going pretty good until ALL OF A SUDDEN you find yourself sitting in theENT doctor’s office listening to the doctortell you your 10 year old needs surgery – tonsils and adnoids gotta go…and summer vacation starts next Monday…. The same day, you’re at a friend’s house and your seven year old falls off the top of an inflatable water slide and lands on his left ankle screaming in pain - is his ankle broken or sprained you wonder? Then you come home to find your backyard smells funky and is mushy so you make a few calls and find out it could be your septic tank needs to bepumped so you’re now stuck at home smelling stinkies and the septic man comes and says ” No problem lady we’ll have this done in 20 minutes” only to look out your window three hours later to see the man cursing like crazy while screeching “Lady this tank has never been emptied and this house is almost 40 years old!” (We just moved here so we’re not to blame!) Then the cursing septic tank pumper man tell you there is a cracked pipe and it’s gonna cost you some bucks to have it fixed… of course the one year new home owner’s warranty expired less than two weeks ago. You recover until you go inside to find that the load of laundry you put in the washing machine earlier in the morning is full of water….looks like the pump went out on the washer. Did someone just cough? Oh wait, that was YOU. You realize you feel chilled even though its 90 degrees. Looks like you’re getting the bug your kids had over the weekend. You don’t feel that rotten just a little chilled so you grab a sweatshirt and decide to finish that gawdy glittered sympathy card you started earlier when your mojo was flowing….it’s not so bad you think…it just needs maybe a Prima flower so you grab your roll of glue dots and at the same timeyou sneeze… ALL OVER the gawdy glittered sympathy card (Just add a little more glitter, right?!) Of course, when you sneezed, the roll of glue dots slips fromyour hand and takes off across the card you just finished, over top the new patterned paper you spent a small fortune for at the local scrapbook store and the glue dots keep rolling across your glassdining room table top not stopping until the entire roll has unrolled….of course theglue dots are facing down on everything it just rolled over….Have you ever had one of these “perfect” days?

HopeYOU’RE having a great day…!

Olive a good attitude, don’t you?

My computer keeps locking up every time we try to load the video! Please check back tomorrow in hopes that we are able to fix this problem!

3-D Furry Snow Leopard

“MeeeeeOooowwwW!”
Such a pretty kitty (a.k.a., snow leopard) for my son’s 4th grade zoo project.  It measures 21″ in length and approximately 18″ tall.  The body was made out of foam board covered with snow leopard fur.  If you look closely you can tell that the front legs are 3-D because we paper mached the legs to give them some dimension.  Be on the lookout for this handsome guy to reappear in another project soon!  We’re just trying to decide what exactly we want to do with him! :)

Olive Juice Studio: Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Sunday, May 9, 2010 at 12:56am
Olive Juice Studio Wishes All ofOur Mom Readers a WONDERFUL and HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!

What is your fondest Mother’s Day memory? Is it one of you as a mother, is it a memory of your own mother or of another adult figure who played the role of “mom” in your life? My fondest memory is of my very first Mother’s Day. My first child was born on 5-5-00, so on my first Mother’s Day I was a new mom to a week old baby and I also got to spend the day with my mother who was helping me transition into my new role as a “mom.” I remember snuggling with my son and my mom looked over at me with tears in her eyes and said, “Now you get what being a mom is all about, don’t you?” I always thought “I got it” but really I had no clue until that moment. Once you become a mom your life changes forever and the things you didB.C. or B.P.(Before Children/Before Pet) are pretty much just fond memories to relive in your head…”remember when…” From here on out…we worry about our children 24/7 for the rest of our lives and celebratein their unconditional love! Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

AND, in honor of Mother’s Day I found some super cute stories and quotes to share!

For severalweeks, a six-year oldboy kept telling his first-grade teacher about the baby brother or sister that was expected at his house. One day, the mother allowed the boy to feel the movements of the unborn child. The six-year old was obviously impressed, but made no comment. Furthermore, he stopped telling his teacher about the impending event. The teacher finally sat the boy on her lap and said, “Tommy, whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were expecting at home?” Tommy burst into tears and confessed, “I think Mommy ate it!”

DIY, but Mom’s Way
While assembling furniture, my friendSusan asked her roommate’s five-year-old son to bring her a screwdriver. “Do you want a ‘Daddy’ screwdriver or a ‘Mommy’ screwdriver?” the little boy asked.
Confused but preoccupied,Susan absentmindedly said, “Bring me a ‘Mommy’ screwdriver.” The child came back and handed her a butter knife.

Peace and Quiet
AuntJoanie is the mother of two high-spirited young girls. When I called her one morning, our conversation was constantly interrupted by thesound of kids screaming and chasing each other. “Could you hold on for a moment?” my aunt finally asked, putting down the phone. Within ten seconds all I could hear was absolute silence. Then, “Okay, I’m back.”
“But it’s so quiet!” I exclaimed. “You must have complete control over those two.” “Not really,” my aunt confessed wearily. “I’m in the closet.”

“Mothers of teenagers know why animals eat their young.” – Author Unknown

“Mothers are all slightly insane.” – J.D. Salinger

“I want my children to have all the things I couldn’t afford. Then I want to move in with them.” – Phyllis Diller
“The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.” – Calvin Trillin

“A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.” – Tenneva Jordan

“There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it.” – Chinese Proverb

“You don’t really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around – and why his parents will always wave back.” – William D. Tammeus.

“My mother’s menu consisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.” – Buddy Hackett

“Any mother could perform the jobs of several air-traffic controllers with ease.” – Lisa Alther

“My mother had a great deal of trouble with me, but I think she enjoyed it.” – Mark Twain

Now, if only the dishes were done, the house was cleaned, the laundry washed and folded and dinner cooked each evening by someone other than me theother 364 days out of the year ….sigh….I know, I know – wishful thinking! LOL!

Enjoy your special day!
Olive holidays, don’t you?

“Colorado Calamity” 3-D Board Game

“Colorado Calamity” 3-D Game Board
 Friday, May 7, 2010 at 11:44am
Hi Everyone!!! I wanted to share with you a project my fourth grader and I worked on for the past few weeks called the “State Fair.” What a HUGE assignment for a fourth grader to take on!!! Each student is assigned a state to research. They have to learn as much as possible about the economy, government, industry, history, agriculture, etc. After doing all of the research each child has to pick from a list of 7-8 projects to complete using the information they found while researching. They then have to write a paperabout what they learned, present itto the entire class without using any notecards and then today all of the parents and the entire school are invited to a “State Fair” to seeall of the projects on display and they sing songs about the United States. It’s a REALLY big deal and I’m headed toschool in about an hour toattend thefair.

My son got the state of Colorado and decided to make a 3-D game board of Pikes Peak.We spent hours and hours building this mountain out of the pink foam insulation for houses -we broke chunks of the foam and stacked them using a hot glue gun and a long screw to anchor the pieces together. Once we had the basic frame we used newpaper, duct tape and masking tape to give the mountain more dimension. Then, we covered it with over four packages of Rigid Wrap (plaster coated fabric) and covered the entire mountain. We let it dry overnight and then built stairs spiraling around the entire mountain using scraps of the pink foam insulation, paper scraps and duct tape. We then covered the steps and the entire mountain with another layer of Rigid Wrap plaster and let it dry overnight. The next step was to paint the entire mountain gray and added highlights with black paint in the creases of the steps and wherever it looked like a shadow would form.

With the help of Microsoft Word we designed a sign for the top of Pikes Peak and a sign with the games name on it – my son named his game “Colorado Calamity.” We also worked together making up trivia questions (True and False, Multiple Choice, Fill-in the blank and Yes/No questions). My son came up wtih the questions and I typed them. He came up with 70 trivia questions and 22 “Calamity” questions. The “Calamity” questions were scenarios – such as, “There’s an avalanche up ahead run back seven spaces quickly to avoid getting hurt!” Or “A hiker needs your help – climb up four steps to offer assistance.” The point of the game is to see who can make it to the top of Pikes Peak first. It turned out great and he actually brought home his grade yesterday – he got an A+!!!! WoHooo! I was so happy for him and he was soooooooo proud of himself! He kept telling me that was the hardest he had ever worked on any project so he definitely earned his grade!!!

Here’s a photo of the entire game:

(My first grader donated four Lego men to the cause to be used as the game tokens – see them climbing the mountain?!)

I’m a proud mama, but oh so glad this project is over! LOL! : )

Olive it when my child is proud of his work!

Confessions of a Burnt Out Mom…

 Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 3:15pm
Please tell me…What’s wrong with this picture? Like many of you know, I’m a mom to two school aged boys – first and fourth grade. My confession is that I CAN’T WAIT UNTIL SCHOOL IS OUT!!!In fact, I’ve been secretly putting an “X” through each day since mid- April (Shhh! Don’t tell my kids, my husband or anyone I know…they all think I’m crazy as it is!) As of today, we have just 17 days to go before we’re free for three months! WoHOooO!!! Of course, my kids are excited for their summer vacation to begin too but they are also sad that the school year is drawing to an end. Yes, it does make me sad thinking that the end of each school year means my guys will be in a higher grade next fall which means they’re getting older (and I’M GETTING OLDER TOO)but that’s whyI try to squeeze the most ofout each day I spend with my kids….AND that’s why I scrapbook torecord those awesome memories. BUT…honestly, I am much more excited than they are because this means:

  • No more rushing around in the morning (for three months – yeah!)trying to find a matching pair of socks without a hole in the toe….
  • No more arguing with my fourth grader to wear socks with his sneakers on gym day so his classmates wouldn’t die from his smelly feet.
  • No more trying to find the missing math paper that mysteriously disappeared from my fourth grader’s folder that it was put in the nigth before..
  • No more packing lunches with completely different items for two little boys who are night and day only to get chewed out after school and laughed at by the crossing guard/lunch mom who witnessed a very teary eyed first grader whohad to eathis big brother’s sandwich soaked in ketchup instead of the veggie sub he requested..and of course having to listen to my fourth grader tell me “Nice try on packing a veggie sub for me mom…remember I don’t do green!”
  • No more squabbles over bedtime…
  • No more arguing about doing homework before playtime…
  • No more cramming for a spelling test that was accidentally overlooked….
  • No more signing slips for my fourth grader for forgetting his homework at school OR at home…
  • No more school projects like the State Fair project my fourth grader and I finished yesterday after spending 30+ hours on it…
  • No more furry fuzzy animals that cost mommy an arm and a leg because her son was assigned an animalwho’s fur was extinct (except for somegrossly overpriced fur that of course fit the bill and looked amazing)in all of Chicagoland from January-March which can now be found everywhere for a 1/4 of the cost.
  • No more feeling guilty for not signing my first grader’s reading folder a million times this year (he really did do his reading BUT mom kept forgetting to sign)…
  • No more papers that aren’t 12×12 in size and have writing all over them telling me about the next PTA social event…fundraiser..conference…fieldtrip…etc…
  • No more road rage in the school parking lot when the same mom each and every day this year decides she needs to get out of the parking lot first even though the parking lot is in gridlock status she still pulls forward then backs up until she weazels her way out of her parking spot with less than an inch between her bumper and MINE (pretty much every day)…
  • No more trying to talk my first grader out of wearing a mohawk to school ( he did win this battle on several occasions…you know what they say, choose your battles!Mom even styled his hair with 3/4 of a jar of sticky hair goop to spike the dickens out of it.I jusst want to know whathappened to the cute little boy look?)
  • No more PTA functions..
  • No more rushing to cram everything into the hours while my kids are at school so I can be back in time to pick them up…
  • No more arguing with my first grader to eat breakfast before school (which is pure torture because he typically doesn’t eat until after 10AM).
  • No more scrambling to find clean clothes only to remember I put the dirty clothes in the washing machine the night before but forgot to run it….
  • No more cramming for a week planning den meetings for my Webelo I den and having to pick my brain for the right fieldtrip for each month…
  • No more planning my husband’s den meeting for his Tiger den where he appears so prepared but yet has no clue how to make any of the crafts I so thoughtfully crafted for our little scouts (can you believe it?!)
  • No more racing to den meetings and losing my voice for talking faster and louder than an auctioneer to 10 VERY active9 & 10 year olds for two hours straight…
  • No more wiping tears from a sad face when someone at school says something hurtful.
  • No more planning forCub Scout Pack Nights the first Friday of each month…
  • (I could list another 20 plus “no mores” but I’m sure my ramblings have already bored you to tears so I will stop here.)

BUT….I will miss a few things…Such as my precious few moments with a hot cup of tea and the silence -free of bickeringwhen the kiddos first go off to school in the morning…volunteering at school in hopes of embarrassing my kids (just kidding – they love it)… talking to my mom possee before and after school…Going on “mom only” four mile power walks each morning…snuggling with my kids as they read and praising them for their hardwork…reviewing all of my children’s schoolwork and admiring their progress…working together on school projects (stressful and irritating at times but a fun way to spend time working on something together)…listening to the stories my kids share with me about their day at school and the conversations with their peers. I’ll also miss my cub scout den because I have a group of the 10 greatest boys in the fourth grade at our school.

17 more days until we can sleep in past 7AM…..we can eat breakfast for lunch…we can eat our breakfast/lunch/dinner outside in the backyard while swatting at the pesky little mosquitoes and bees….we can hop in the car at the last minute for an impromptu trip to the zoo…the aquarium…the park….a museum….the pool…the YMCA…a friend’s house….miniature golf…go-carts…we get to visit grandma in Michigan for a few weeks…we can go camping without trying to figure out a way to squeeze a few moments of family time out of a weekend…we can go to the library and read books we want to read….Mom gets to take her boys fishing since Daddy is squeamish around worms….we can stay up later and have a bonfire in the backyard ONA WEEKNIGHT.. and don’t forget the s’mores…we can .have campouts on the living room floor….we can build that fort we’ve been talking about doing all year….we get to all run through the garden barefoot and not have to worry about getting dirty….we can make projects/crafts that WE want to make not something that is assigned….bubble blowing contests…water balloon fights parents vs.the kids…squirt gun battles….jumping on the trampoline…bike rides….long leisurely walks…talking….just spending time together. And crafting….once summer vacation begins there seems to be more time for projects. AND this folks, is the confession of a mom needing a break so thatshe can refuel for the NEXT school year!
(To be continued…)

Olive a great confession, don’t you?
